Когнитивная архитектура DUAL разрабатывалась Бойчо Кокиновым (Boicho Kokinov) [27.12.1960 – 10.05.2013], директором Центра когнитологии для Центральной и Восточной Европы (Central and East European Center for Cognitive Science - CEECCS) в Новом болгарском университете (New Bulgarian University - NBU), София, Болгария и его исследовательской группой в составе Александра Петрова (Alexander Petrov), Мориса Гринберга (Maurice Grinberg), Георгия Петкова (Georgi Petkov), Ивана Ванкова (Ivan Vankov) и др.
После смерти руководителя группы Бойчо Кокинова работу над когнитивными архитектурами и моделями продолжают его ученики.

Общие сведения
DUAL is a general cognitive architecture integrating the connectionist and symbolic approaches at the micro level. DUAL is based on decentralized representation and emergent computation.
- DUAL is developed by a team at the New Bulgarian University led by Boicho Kokinov.
- The second version was co-authored by Alexander Petrov.
- The third version is co-authored by Georgi Petkov and Ivan Vankov.
All cognitive processes modelled on DUAL are emergent computations from the collective behaviour and interactions of many hybrid micro-agents. (CODE)
A number of cognitive models based on the DUAL Cognitive Architecture:
- A model of human reasoning, analogy-making and memory AMBR (Associative Memory-Based Reasoning), has been developed together with Alexander Petrov, Maurice Grinberg, Georgi Petkov, and Ivan Vankov, based on DUAL. It is supposed to unify analogy, deduction, and generalization. The model integrates the subprocesses of memory access, mapping, and transfer. Memory access, mapping, and transfer are running in parallel and interacting with each other, which is in contrast with the dominating sequencial models of processing.
- A model of human episodic memory has been developed based on DUAL. This model is integrated with AMBR and demonstrates the interactions between memory and reasoning. This model predicts that blending of dissimilar episodes can occur based on two separate analogies with a third episode. This prediction has been confirmed and thus the model reveals possible mechanisms of memory reconstruction.
- A model of human judgment, JUDGEMAP, has been developed together with Georgi Petkov, based on DUAL. The model predicts that contrast effects may occur based on irrelevant characteristics of the environment. These predictions have been confirmed experimentally.
- A model of human perception, PEAN, has been developed based on DUAL and extending AMBR with perceptual capabilities. Interactions between analogy, memory, and perception are explored.
